Eye problems (Blindness in right eye)?

My fathers left eye will go blind at the most horrible times. He says it starts out with a funny feeling in his head, and then his left eye will go blind from the bottom up. (If he closes it for about 5 minutes at a time, it will get better, and he will have momentary vision)
