How long would it take for you to die after someone poisoned you?

No, I'm not going to poison someone. I'm going to write a book and in the book a girl bakes cupcakes for her friends but she puts poison in it because they were being mean to her (I'm not going into details) so i'm just wondering...how long after they eat it would they die?
